PPSU in CNC Machining and Injection Molding

PPSU part(1)

PPSU, or polyphenylsulphone, is an amorphous material that belongs to the polysulphone group. It has a high glass transition temperature and low moisture absorption.

It stands out for its superior impact strength and chemical resistance compared to PSU and PES. PPSU can withstand continuous steam sterilization better than other plastics in this group and also resists cleaning agents and disinfectants. It is a tough material, so we use sharp and durable cutting tools to ensure efficient material removal. We use slower cutting speeds and water-soluble coolants to prevent overheating and ensure a smooth finish. We do climb milling and strategic tool paths to enhance results and minimize tool engagement to prevent excess heat.

We do annealing with amorphous thermoplastics like PPSU to prevent stress-cracking and enhance the material's durability. This process involves heating the plastic above its recrystallization temperature for a specific time and then cooling it. This changes the polymer's structure, making it finer and more uniform, relieving internal stresses, and improving mechanical and thermal stability. Proper annealing ensures optimal performance and extends the lifespan of PPSU parts.

TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW

Basic Knowledge of PPSU

What is PPSU?

Polyphenylsulfone (PPSF or PPSU) is a high-performance polymer consisting of aromatic rings connected by sulfone (SO2) groups. PPSU is a strong and versatile polymer that can withstand high impact, outperforming even high-performance polyetherimide (PEI). It has a Heat Deflection Temperature of up to 196 ℃ and a transparent, amber-like appearance that allows for easy coloration, enhancing its design flexibility. PPSU's amorphous nature and lack of a melting point make it adaptable to various manufacturing processes. It can endure rigorous sterilization, withstanding over 1000 steam cycles at 134℃. Additionally, its resistance to hydrolysis, hot water, and steam expands its usefulness in different industrial settings. Compared to thermoplastics like polypropylene (PP) and polyethersulfone (PES), PPSU stands out for its superior durability and heat tolerance. It is non-absorbent, preventing odors or colors from affecting it and contributing to its hygienic profile.

FAQ

Machining PPSU Buying FAQ

Yes, PPSU is BPA-free. It is a high-performance engineering thermoplastic that does not contain Bisphenol A (BPA).
No, PPSU is not biodegradable. It is a highly durable and stable thermoplastic that does not break down easily in natural environments. Proper disposal methods, such as recycling, should be followed to minimize environmental impact.
Yes, PPSU is considered safe for baby products. It is often used in the manufacturing of baby bottles, pacifiers, and other feeding items due to its high heat resistance, durability, and resistance to chemicals. It is also free from harmful substances such as BPA.
Yes, PPSU is generally safe for UV sterilization. It has excellent chemical resistance and can withstand sterilization methods, including UV sterilization, without compromising its mechanical or chemical properties.
PPSU is inherently flame-resistant and has a high resistance to combustion. While it is not completely non-flammable, it has a high ignition temperature and meets various flammability standards. It is considered a safe material in terms of fire resistance.

Other Materials

PE(1)

Polyethylene(PE)

Polyethylene products are usually for packaging and containers due to their durability and chemical resistance—high-density polyethylene (HDPE) for rigid containers or low-density polyethylene (LDPE) for flexible packaging.
