Polypropylene(PP)
Polypropylene (PP) is a lightweight, cost-effective, and versatile thermoplastic polymer belonging to the polyolefin group.
introduction
Polypropylene(PP) in CNC Machining and Injection Molding
Polypropylene (PP) is a thermoplastic polymer with high chemical resistance, low density, good electrical insulation, and low cost.
This white material is partially crystalline and non-polar. While PP is not as commonly machined as metals, it can be CNC machined with the right tools and techniques. PP has a low melting point, so we use moderate to high cutting speeds to avoid excessive heat buildup and then moderate to high feed rates to help control chip formation and avoid chip welding. We make sure to find the balance to prevent the melting or smearing of the material. While PP generally does not require coolant during machining, we always monitor the temperature. If excessive heat is generated, a minimal amount of coolant or air blast may be used to cool the cutting area. Additionally, PP is often prone to burring. A secondary operation, such as deburring, may be required to achieve the desired part finish.
It shares similarities with polyethylene but is a bit tougher and can withstand higher temperatures. Due to its slippery surface, it's commonly used in plastic packaging. The material's resistance to chemicals makes it ideal for packaging cleaning products, bleaches, and first-aid items. It is tough and durable, with good fatigue resistance and elasticity. It's safe for electrical goods and cables due to its high insulation properties. In its fiber form, because of its waterproof qualities, PP is used in tote bags, ropes, twine, tape, carpets, upholstery, clothing, and camping equipment. The medical industry also benefits from its waterproof nature, flexible strength, resistance to mold, bacteria, and chemical corrosion. It's easy to clean and can withstand steam sterilization methods.
Polypropylene(PP) Material List
PP Homopolymer
PP homopolymer is the standard grade of Polypropylene (PP). It is a thermoplastic polymer with excellent chemical resistance and fatigue strength.
PP+GF(30%)
PP+GF(30%) is a type of composite material that combines the properties of polypropylene with the added strength and stiffness the glass fiber reinforcement provides.
TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW
Basic Knowledge of Polyproplene(PP)
What is PP (Polypropylene)?
Polypropylene (PP) is a lightweight, cost-effective, and versatile thermoplastic polymer belonging to the polyolefin group. It is produced by polymerizing propylene monomers derived from petroleum or natural gas. With a chemical formula of (C3H6)n, its chemical structure consists of repeating propylene monomers, resulting in a linear hydrocarbon polymer. PP has a low density and melting point, as well as good mechanical strength, chemical resistance to acids and bases, and heat resistance. Additionally, PP is recyclable, marked with recycling code "5," and is considered environmentally friendly. Its processing methods include injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, and thermoforming.
