TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW

Basic Knowledge of PEEK

What is PEEK?

PEEK (Polyetheretherketone) is a strong and durable clear plastic with exceptional chemical resistance, impressive mechanical strength, and stable dimensions. It was invented in November 1978 and then introduced to the market in the early 1980s by Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), which later became Victrex PLC. It can withstand harsh conditions, including exposure to steam, water, and sea water.

PEEK remains rigid at high temperatures and can be used continuously up to 338°F (170°C). These materials maintain their physical properties, like flexural and tensile strength, even in hot water or steam environments. While some may see polyetheretherketone as an expensive thermoplastic, experienced users value its benefits, such as producing lighter, more resilient components that endure challenging conditions for extended periods.

FAQ

Machining PEEK Buying FAQ

The production of PEEK involves complex and precise manufacturing processes, including high-temperature polymerization and advanced quality control measures. Additionally, the raw materials used in PEEK production are costly.
PEEK plastic is highly resistant to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. It can withstand prolonged exposure to sunlight without significantly degrading its mechanical properties. However, it's essential to note that while PEEK has good UV resistance, long-term exposure to intense UV radiation may still impact its performance over time.
PEEK has low water absorption characteristics, which is one of its advantages in certain applications. The water absorption of PEEK is typically less than 0.5% by weight, even after prolonged exposure to humid environments. This low water absorption helps maintain the dimensional stability and mechanical properties of PEEK components in various conditions.
