introduction

Mild Steel 1018 in CNC Machining

Mild Steel 1018, known as low-carbon steel, can be easily drilled, turned, milled, and tapped.

It is composed of Carbon (C) within the range of 0.15-0.20%, Manganese (Mn) at 0.60-0.90%, with maximum limits of 0.04% for Phosphorus (P) and 0.05% for Sulfur (S). These elements contribute to its excellent machinability. In CNC machining 1018, we use sharp cutting tools to maintain a good surface finish. We optimize cutting speeds and feeds based on the specific CNC machine and tooling. We also use coolant/lubrication to control heat during machining. We also consider the workpiece's geometry and fixturing for stability.

It is more machinable than lower-carbon steel. We offer 1018 steel in various forms, including cold-rolled steel, bars, sheets/plates, and wire. Cold-rolled steel is known for its smooth finish, while steel bars are versatile and used for bolts and axles. Sheets/plates are flat and suitable for welding in manufacturing, and steel wire, due to its weldability, is commonly used in construction projects and for crafting items like springs and fencing.

TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW

Basic Knowledge of Mild Steel 1018

What is Mild Steel 1018?

1018 steel is a high-manganese carbon alloy known for excellent machinability. It's preferred for carburized parts due to uniform, hard cases from welds.

1018 is manufactured by melting iron, carbon, and manganese in an electric air and basic oxygen furnace. The molten metal is cast into slabs, then hot-rolled or shaped above its recrystallization temperature. Forging and annealing involve cold working (e.g., cold drawing, rolling, forging) to enhance strength. Heat treatment, commonly annealing, is for improved hardness and durability.

FAQ

Machining Mild Steel 1018 Buying FAQ

A36 is stronger, while 1018 is more ductile, so it is easier to bend. A36 can be flame-hardened but lacks sufficient carbon content for typical quenching and tempering.
Yes, 1018 steel is prone to rust as it contains low amounts of alloying elements so it is more susceptible to corrosion.
No, 1045 is stronger than 1018 due to more carbon and higher tensile strength, but it is harder to weld because of the increased carbon content.
