introduction

Carbon Steel 1215 in CNC Machining

1215 Steel is a type of CNC steel known for its chemical composition containing sulfur, iron, phosphorous, carbon, and manganese. Due to its high sulfur content, it is recognized as free-machining steel.

It is a low alloy, fast-cutting steel widely recognized as the standard for screw stock. It is re-sulphurized and re-phosphorized, giving its excellent cutting speeds and machining characteristics. This steel allows for faster machining rates and reduces CNC machine entanglements by forming small chips during machining.  It is ideal for automatic screw machining and is commonly used for bushings, inserts, hydraulic hose fittings, couplings, studs, pins, and more.

It has lower strength than some cold-drawn grades due to its relatively low carbon content. It contains carbon (C) within the range of 0.0 to 0.09%, manganese (Mn) between 0.75 and 1.05%, phosphorus (P) ranging from 0.04 to 0.09%, and sulfur (S) falling between 0.26 and 0.35%. The remaining balance is comprised of iron (Fe). It responds well to roll threading, is flexible, and can be easily bent and shaped without cracking, but it may not be the best choice for components exposed to intense fatigue stress.

TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW

Basic Knowledge of Carbon Steel 1215

What is Carbon Steel 1215?

Carbon Steel 1215 is a type of carbon steel known for its easy machinability. It contains sulfur, which enhances its machinability by promoting the formation of small, broken chips during machining.

It is commonly used for applications like screws and bolts. However, while it's easy to machine, it may have lower strength compared to some other carbon steels.

FAQ

Machining Carbon Steel 1215 Buying FAQ

Welding 1215 carbon steel can be challenging due to its higher sulfur content, leading to issues like hot cracking during welding. Preheating and careful selection of welding processes and consumables are recommended.
1215 steel is not typically subjected to heat treatment as it is designed to be free-machining. The addition of sulfur in 1215 improves machinability but makes heat treatment less effective. The steel is often used in its as-rolled or as-drawn condition.
1144 steel contains higher sulfur content than 1215, which provides better machinability but can result in lower ductility. 1144 steel undergoes stress relief annealing after machining, enhancing its mechanical properties and dimensional stability.
1018 steel is a low-carbon steel known for its favorable weldability, forming, and machining characteristics. Meanwhile, 1215 steel, also low-carbon, is enhanced with added sulfur to improve machinability. However, this sulfur content diminishes its suitability for welding.
