Magnesium AZ31B in CNC Machining

Magnesium AZ31B Part(1)

Magnesium AZ31B is part of the magnesium-aluminum-zinc alloy family, which is lightweight, has excellent machinability, and has a good strength-to-weight ratio.

This material is a unique magnesium alloy with notable properties like corrosion resistance, heat treatment, and welding. Its corrosion resistance is commendable, owing to the presence of zinc, although it requires protection in aggressive environments. Heat treatment can enhance its mechanical properties, making it less brittle and more ductile through quenching above 300°C, and increasing its ductility and toughness with annealing before quenching. Magnesium AZ31B can be welded using TIG or laser welding methods, but proper surface cleaning before soldering is important for optimal results.

AZ31B has good machinability and can be easily cut, drilled, and shaped using standard machining processes. When machining AZ31B, we use machines with high spindle speeds and low feed rates. Magnesium alloys are softer than many other metals, so higher spindle speeds can help prevent work hardening and extend tool life. Magnesium can produce flammable fine chips, and the dust can be explosive. DEK has adequate ventilation and dust collection systems in place. We ensure the machining area is well-maintained and free of potential ignition sources.

TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW

Basic Knowledge of Magnesium AZ31B

What is Magnesium AZ31B?

Magnesium is about 30% lighter than aluminum and 75% lighter than steel. AZ31B is a specific alloy composed mainly of magnesium (about 96.7% by weight), 3% aluminum, and 1% zinc.

The designation "AZ31B" is derived from the chemical symbols of its components: "A" for aluminum, "Z" for zinc, and "31" representing 3% aluminum and 1% zinc, then the letter "B" specifically denotes a cold-rolled and partially annealed temper. It is also known due to its ductility, corrosion resistance, and weldability at room temperature.

FAQ

Machining Magnesium AZ31B Buying FAQ

No, Magnesium AZ31B does not rust like iron or steel. However, it is susceptible to corrosion. It tends to corrode in the presence of moisture, oxygen, and salt. Protective coatings or surface treatments are often applied to avoid corrosion.
Generally, magnesium alloys, including AZ31B, can be more expensive than some other metals like aluminum or steel. However, its specific properties, such as low density and high strength-to-weight ratio, can justify its cost for certain applications.
Yes, Magnesium AZ31B can be annealed. Annealing is a heat treatment process that involves heating the material to a specific temperature and then allowing it to cool slowly. This process can be used to relieve stresses, improve machinability, and modify the mechanical properties of the material.
