TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW

Basic Knowledge of Kovar

What is Kovar?

Kovar is a nickel-cobalt ferrous alloy composed of approximately 29% nickel, 17% cobalt, 54% iron, and small amounts of other elements such as manganese and silicon.

This material is often used for parts requiring dimensional stability in varying temperatures, such as electronic and semiconductor components. The low CTE of Kovar closely matches that of certain glass ceramics, such as borosilicate glass. This makes Kovar a popular choice for hermetic sealing applications, where it is used to create a reliable and tight seal between glass and metal components.

Advantages of Kovar

Low expansion coefficient

Good mechanical properties

Excellent electrical conductivity

High melting point

Compatibility with glass sealing

Thermal stability

Applications of Kovar

Hermetic seals

Aerospace components

Power tubes

Resistors

Electron tubes

Semiconductor devices

FAQ

Machining Kovar Buying FAQ

Invar is designed to have a very low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and is thus “in-variant” to temperature, Kovar is designed to be “co-variant”. It was designed so that its CTE closely matched that of borosilicate glasses but it is a good match for some alumina ceramics as well.
Kovar is known for its low coefficient of thermal expansion.Though Nickel has good resistance and it is present at 29% – which is pretty high – you have to account for the 53% iron where the iron oxide has to be controlled for to prevent rusting.
Kovar is magnetic due to its iron-nickel composition.
Kovar is weldable using common techniques such as electron beam, laser, and resistance welding.
Kovar has good strength and is often chosen for its combination of mechanical and thermal properties.
